Temperance is self-control or self discipline and it is one the 12 fruit of the Spirit. Self discipline or diligence is the opposite of laziness. Jesus commanded us to strive to enter the straight gate. To strive is to work hard and be diligent. Self-discipline is needed to win the race and win the fight. The fight is the fight against the flesh and the sinful nature. Jesus fought against the flesh and was obedient unto the death of the cross. The race is a race to finish the work and assignment God has giving you to do. Jesus finished His work on the earth.
Temperance is self-control or self discipline and it is one the 12 fruit of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Ephesians 5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
Revelation 22:2 2In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
Jesus commanded us to strive to enter the straight gate. To strive is to work hard and be diligent.
Lk. 13:22 22And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, 24Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. 25When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: 26Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. 27But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. 28There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. 29And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. 30And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.
Self-discipline is needed to win the race and win the fight. The fight is the fight against the flesh and the sinful nature in prayer.
Col 4:12 - Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently G75 for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
1 Cor. 9: 24 24Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. 25And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 26I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
1 Tim. 6: 11But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
Jesus fought against the flesh and was obedient unto the death of the cross.
Lk. 22:41 41And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Phil. 2:8 8And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Jesus said for us to watch and pray lest we enter into temptation
Matt. 26:40 40And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 41Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
The race is a race to finish the work and assignment God has giving you to do.
Col. 1:28 28Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: 29Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.
Phil 3:13 13Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
2 Tim. 4: 6For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7I have fought a good fight, I have finished mycourse, I have kept the faith: 8Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
Jesus ran His race and finished His work
John 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
